A First Look At Allie Rowbottom’s New Novel

Language Arts premieres the trailer for the Aesthetica author’s new novel, Lovers XXX.

Following the publication of Aesthetica, a propulsive and revelatory novel about a former influencer undergoing an experimental procedure to undo years of plastic surgery, Allie Rowbottom is trading Botox for big hair. Today, Rowbottom, a beloved literary It Girl, announces the publication of her next novel: LOVERS XXX, a glamorous sun-drenched Los Angeles epic that begins in the early ‘80s, during the so-called Golden Age of pornography, and ends thirty years later, in 2015.

LOVERS XXX follows the intimate and complex friendship between two adult film starlets as they navigate sex, drugs, and life on the glittery margins. Think Boogie Nights meets Shirley Hazzard’s The Transit of Venus.

“Mainstream pornography wasn’t created for me, I believed that then and I still do, though when I watch vintage performers like Christy Canyon, Ginger Lynn, and Nina Hartley, I almost believe it could be,” Rowbottom says. “Men’s pleasure is the axis around which culture turns, for much of human history, such has been the case. What obsesses me as a writer is not just how women survive despite this, but how we empower ourselves and each other: how we love, how we fuck, how we make art. LOVERS XXX is the result of this obsession, a novel about pornography, yes, but also female sexuality explored beyond binaries, how that sexuality is suppressed, and how it can prevail.”
